Banded Sunfish, Enneacanthus obesus
Physical Description:
� Very compressed, deep body
� Upturned mouth
� Rounded pectoral fin
� Rounded tail fin
� Medium-sized eye
� Dark bands on side
� Black opercular spot
� Iridescent side
� Dorsal, anal, and tail fins dark with white or blue spots
� Side of body dark-colored
� Nuptial males and females with blue specks on their bodies
Similar species:
� Bluespotted sunfish (Enneacanthus gloriosus)
Mean body size:
� Adults are 40-70 mm standard length
Habitat:
� Lakes, ponds, swamps, calm parts of streams, and backwaters
� Found in vegetation and shallows
Distribution in VA:
� James, York, and Chowan drainages and the Dismal Swamp
Food Habits:
� Insects and microcrustaceans
Reproductive Habits:
� Some females can spawn after one year
� Spawning occurs April through July at 23-27�C
� Males make a nest in gravel or sand and eggs laid on plants or the bottom
� Fecundity is 802-1,400 eggs per female
Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance:
� Good aquarium fish
