Physical Description:
� Narrow, elongate body
� Small, terminal mouth
� Large eye
� Teeth on jaws
� No spines on fins
� Slightly round tail fin
� Dorsal fin is located over the anal fin
� Large plate-like scales on the head
� Narrow, dark bars on side
� Silver cheek with blue iridescence
� Males with tubercles on fins
Similar species:
� Speckled killifish (Fundulus rathbuni)
Mean body size:
� Adults are 50-75 mm standard length
Habitat:
� Large rivers and marshes in fresh and salt water, estuaries
Distribution in VA:
� Atlantic slope drainages on the coast or well inland
Food Habits:
� Microcrustaceans, aquatic and terrestrial insects, and plants
Reproductive Habits:
� Mature at age 1, short-lived
� Spawning occurs from April to September at 21-32OC
� Eggs adhere to objects in the water by filaments
� Fecundity is 32-252 eggs per female

� Baitfish
