Physical Description: � Chubby body � Dorsal fin origin above or a little behind pelvic fin base � Medium to small eye � Slightly pointed snout with large, subterminal mouth � Small tail fin, upper lobe pointed and longer than the rounded lower lobe � Olive or brown sides, side stripe gold or yellow � Pale or yellowish fins paired fins � Tail and dorsal fins have orange or red color Similar species: � River chub (Nocomis micropogon) Mean body size: � Adults are 90-200 mm standard length Habitat: � Warm, clear, rocky creeks and rivers Distribution in VA: � New River drainage Food Habits: � Insect larvae, sometimes other invertebrates and fish Reproductive Habits: � Mature around age 3 � Spawning occurs late April to early June at water temperatures of 15-25�C � Males build gravel mounds and a pit � Fecundity is not known Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: � Most primitive chub References: Jenkins, R.E and N.M.
