Black Jumprock, Scartomyzon cervinus
Physical Description:
� Elongate, blotchy, striped sucker
� Black-tipped or black-edged dorsal and tail fins
� Dorsal fin edge straight or slightly convex
� Top of the head convex
� Inferior mouth
� Smallish lips, halves of lower lip form a crescent
Similar species:
� Bigeye jumprock (Scartomyzon ariommus)
Mean body size:
� Adults are 85-155 mm standard length
Habitat:
� Swift current in warm, moderate-gradient creeks and rivers over rubble, boulder, and bedrock
Distribution in VA:
� New, James, Chowan, and Roanoke drainages.
� Probably introduced to the James and New drainages
Food Habits:
� Aquatic insect larvae, water mites, and some algae and detritus
Reproductive Habits:
� Many spawn at age 2
� Females usually larger than males
� Spawning in mid- to late spring at 14-23°C
Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance:
� Used as bait fish for warmwater species
