Bridle Shiner, Notropis bifrenatus
Physical Description:
· Slim, sometimes deep-bodied form
· Dorsal fin origin above front half of pelvic fin base
· Large eye
· Slightly subterminal mouth with somewhat round or pointed snout
· Black side stripe that circles the snout and extends onto tail fin base
· Straw back, lower side and belly straw with silver flecks
Similar species:
· Swallowtail shiner (Notropis procne)
Mean body size:
· Adults are 28-40 mm standard length
Habitat:
· Warm, slow creeks and rivers, ponds, lakes, and impoundments around submerged aquatic vegetation
Distribution in VA:
· Potomac, Rappahannock, York, James, and Chowan drainages
Food Habits:
· Insects, microcrustaceans, plants, and detritus
Reproductive Habits:
· Mature in 1 year
· Spawning occurs late May to mid-July in water 14.4-26.7°C
· Spawn in calm pools above water plants
· Fecundity is 1,062-2,110 eggs per female
Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance:
· Special concern status recommended in Virginia
· May no longer be found in the Rappahannock, Chowan, or Potomac drainages
