(See Fish Gallery Below)
Although most sculpins are marine
fishes (about 300 species), 28 species are
found in freshwaters in North America; at least
9 species occur in Virginia. Sculpins are
flattened, bottom-dwelling fish with large
broad head and mouth, and fan-like pectoral
fins. These small stream fishes add to the
aquatic diversity and serve as links in the food
chain and indicators of water quality. They live
primarily on river bottoms and feed on benthic
invertebrates.
