Physical Description: 
�	Rounded anal fin
�	Dark blotch at the base of the dorsal fin
�	Stout body, round anteriorly, compressed posteriorly
�	Barbels bicolored
�	Sharp dorsal and pectoral spines
�	Depressed head
�	Inferior mouth
�	Tail fin not forked
�	Brown back
�	Yellow-green side
�	Fins colored somewhat yellow-green

Similar species: 
�	White catfish (Ameiurus catus)
�	Snail bullhead (Ameiurus brunneus)
�	Yellow bullhead (Ameiurus natalis)

Mean body size:
�	Adults are 150-220 mm standard length 

Habitat:
�	Warm tributaries and main stems of drainages, sometimes large creeks
�	Pools and backwaters

Distribution in VA:
�	Roanoke, Pee Dee, James, and Chowan drainages

Food Habits:  
�	Insects, fish, and plants

Reproductive Habits: 
�	Females mature at age 3
�	Spawning occurs in June and July at 21-24�C
�	Fecundity is 207-1,742 eggs per female

Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: 
�	Good to eat
