Physical Description:
� Elongate, robust body
� Forked tail fin
� Inferior mouth; long snout, overhangs the mouth
� Tubercles small and present on male on head, body, and all fins
� Dark olive-colored body
� Dorsal and tail fins reddish, other fins pale
Similar species:
� Blacknose dace (Rhinichthys atratulus)
Mean body size:
� Adults are 60-85 mm standard length
Habitat:
� Fast waters of streams around rubble, boulders, and bedrock
Distribution in VA:
� Potomac, Rappahannock, James, New, and Tennessee drainages
Food Habits:
� Insects, worms, crustaceans, mites, algae, and other plant material
Reproductive Habits:
� Mature by age 2
� Spawning occurs April to May in water at 11.1-23.3�C
� Fecundity is 1,400-2,800 eggs per female
Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance:
� Common in its range
