Physical Description: 
�	Compressed, stocky body
�	Large, terminal mouth
�	Cycloid scales
�	Rounded pectoral fin
�	Rounded tail fin
�	Large eye
�	Dark brown to black body
�	Brown-black opercular spot
�	Dark horizontal bars on cheeks
�	Dark mottling and stripes on body

Similar species: 
�	Green sunfish (Lepomis cyanellus) 

Mean body size:
�	Adults are 100-170 mm standard length 

Habitat:
�	Nocturnal, mud-loving, sedentary 
�	Sluggish pools, swamps, and ponds with plants and other cover

Distribution in VA:
�	Chowan, James, York, and Rappahannock drainages and the Dismal Swamp

Food Habits:  
�	Crustaceans, insects, and fish

Reproductive Habits: 
�	Life span maximum is 8 years
�	Spawning period is not known in Virginia  
�	Nesting occurs in early June on soft bottoms in vegetation 

Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: 
�	Extirpated from southern New York
