Orangefin Madtom,  Noturus gilberti

 
Physical Description: 
�	Looks like a small catfish, elongate body, compressed posteriorly, narrow, depressed head
�	Pale area on upper tail fin lobe
�	Small eye near the top of the head
�	Inferior mouth, short barbels around mouth
�	Short pectoral spine
�	Gray or brown body
�	Fins have pale edges

Similar species: 
�	Freckled madtom (Noturus nocturnus)
�	Slender madtom (Noturus exilis)

Mean body size:
�	Adults are 60-80 mm standard length 

Habitat:
�	Clear or turbid streams in strong runs and riffles
�	In cavities formed by rubble and boulders

Distribution in VA:
�	Roanoke drainage
�	Introduced to the upper James drainage

Food Habits:  
�	Aquatic insect larvae

Reproductive Habits: 
�	Mature by age 2
�	Spawning occurs in late April through May water 10-20�C
�	Fecundity is 32-70 eggs per female

Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: 
�	Threatened in Virginia and North Carolina, special concern status nationally
