Physical Description: � Eyes almost on top of head � Slightly rounded tail fin � Somewhat deep and compressed body � Somewhat pointed nose and terminal mouth � Barred or checkered body � First dorsal fin clear with orange-red color � Second dorsal, anal, pelvic, and tail fins dark green or black with orange-red band � Hour glass shaped pigment at base of tail fin � Dark-colored body � Dark dashes and spots on head � Some fish only have yellow color in their fins Similar species: � Greenfin darter (Etheostoma chlorobranchium) Mean body size: � Adults are 45-70 standard length Habitat: � Warm, clear, rocky streams and rivers Distribution in VA: � Found in Tennessee drainage Food Habits: � Insects Reproductive Habits: � Mature by age 1 � Spawning occurs May to August � Eggs buried and guarded by a male � Fecundity is 23-131 eggs per female Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: � Common in its range References: Jenkins, R.E and N.M.
