Physical Description: � Somewhat deep body � Dorsal fin origin behind and sometimes above back half of pelvic fin base � Medium-sized eye � Narrow, rounded snout, subterminal mouth � Small pale spot at each end of dorsal fin base � Somewhat spotted side, olive back, silver sides, silver-white belly � Snout, lips, and chin reddish � Dorsal and tail fin with red lines along the front base of fin � Breeding males bright red with green stripe on the side Similar species: � Saffron shiner (Notropis rubricroceus) Mean body size: � Adults are 40-55 mm standard length Habitat: � Clear creeks and streams in pools and runs Distribution in VA: � New, Pee Dee, and Roanoke (Dan system) drainages; Food Habits: � Insects Reproductive Habits: � Mature in 1 to 2 years � Spawning occurs May to June in water 17.8-23.3�C � Spawn over chub nests � Fecundity is unknown Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: � May have been introduced into the Dan system References: Jenkins, R.E and N.M.
