Physical Description: � Somewhat deep body � Dorsal fin origin above back half of pelvic fin base � Medium-sized eye � Narrow, rounded snout, subterminal mouth � Elongate spot at base of tail fin � Dark side stripe on back half of body � Olive back, silver sides, white belly � Fins pale except for black mark on tail fin � Breeding males bright red with blue stripe on the side Similar species: � Redlip shiner (Notropis chiliticus) Mean body size: � Adults are 40-60 mm standard length Habitat: � Clear, cold, rocky creeks and streams Distribution in VA: � Tennessee drainage; possibly introduced into the New drainage Food Habits: � Insects, worms, spiders, plants, and algae Reproductive Habits: � Mature in 1 to 2 years � Spawning occurs mid-May to late July in water 16.1-30�C � Spawn over chub nests � Also, may spawn in gravel runs without nests � Fecundity is 445-1,174 eggs per female Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: � May be extirpated from the Powell River References: Jenkins, R.E and N.M.
