Physical Description: � Elongate, stocky body � Forked caudal fin � Inferior mouth; long snout, overhangs the mouth � Hard ridge on lower jaw � Tubercles present on male on head and body � Dark olive-colored body � Dorsal and anal fins in spawning males have orange, black, and pale bands Similar species: � Bluefin stoneroller (Campostoma pauciradii) Mean body size: � Adults are 60-150 mm standard length Habitat: � Found in clear streams over a hard bottom in runs and riffles Distribution in VA: � Found in all major drainages in Virginia except the Rappahannock and York Food Habits: � Algae and detritus Reproductive Habits: � Mature in 1-5 years, depending on where they are � Spawning occurs April to May in water at 13-25� � Males territorial with same species only � Spawning occurs in gravel pools � Males dig spawning pit � Fecundity is 150-4,800 eggs per female Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: � Important bait fish and food � Common in its range References: Jenkins, R.E and N.M.
