Physical Description: � Elongate body � Two dorsal fins, almost connected � Large eyes near top of head � Terminal mouth � Very slight fork in tail fin � Tan-olive-colored body � Dark, round blotches along the side in a line, bunched together near the tail � Dark bands across back � Dark-colored dorsal fin Similar species: � Blackside darter (Percina maculata) Mean body size: � Adults are 45-65 mm standard length Habitat: � Warm, clear streams and rivers in slow currents Distribution in VA: � Native to the Atlantic slope in the James, York, Rappahannock, and Potomac drainages Food Habits: � Insects and other invertebrates Reproductive Habits: � Mature by age 2 � Spawning occurs March to mid-May in water 7-16�C � Probably occurs over gravel riffles � Fecundity is unknown � Hybridizes with the shield darter Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: � Status of this fish needs to be studied further � Rare in the Potomac drainage References: Jenkins, R.E and N.M.
