Tadpole Madtom, Noturus gyrinus
Physical Description:
� Looks like a small catfish
� Stubby, rounded body, compressed posteriorly
� Short head, terminal mouth, short barbels around mouth
� Small eye near the top of the head
� Broad tail
� Dark line on side
� Short pectoral spine
� Gold-brown body
� Dusky gold fins
Similar species:
� Ouachita madtom (Noturus lachneri)
Mean body size:
� Adults are 50-85 mm standard length
Habitat:
� Warm creeks, streams, and rivers, ponds, lakes, and reservoirs in vegetation
Distribution in VA:
� All major Atlantic slope drainages
Food Habits:
� Crustaceans and aquatic insects
Reproductive Habits:
� Mature by age 2
� Spawning probably occurs in from April through August
� Fecundity is 43-323 eggs per female
Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance:
� Pectoral sting of this madtom is toxic
