Physical Description: � Eyes almost on top of head � Straight-edged tail fin � Long pectoral fin � Compressed body � Somewhat pointed nose and terminal mouth � Dark flecks or bars on body � Dark band around neck � Dark band around tail fin base, 2 yellow blotches above that � First dorsal fin with yellow band at top � Second dorsal, anal, pelvic, and tail fins yellow � Yellow-olive colored body Similar species: � Spotted darter (Etheostoma maculatum) Mean body size: � Adults are 20-30 mm standard length Habitat: � Warm, large streams and rivers over pea-sized gravel Distribution in VA: � Found in Clinch River in the Tennessee drainage Food Habits: � Insects Reproductive Habits: � Only live for one year � Spawning occurs mid-May to early July � Occurs in runs and riffles of sand and gravel � Fecundity is around 58 eggs per female Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: � Virginia's smallest darter � Threatened in Virginia References: Jenkins, R.E and N.M.
