Physical Description: � Eyes almost on top of head � Rounded tail fin � Somewhat compressed body � Somewhat pointed nose and terminal mouth � Dark lines, checks, or faint vertical bars on body � Dark olive-colored body � Narrow, dark edge and red streaks on tail fin � Blood red spots on last half of body and first dorsal fin Similar species: � Spotted darter (Etheostoma maculatum) Mean body size: � Adults are 35-65 standard length Habitat: � Warm, rocky streams and rivers, in gentle runs and flowing pools Distribution in VA: � Native to Tennessee drainage Food Habits: � Insects and other invertebrates Reproductive Habits: � Mature by age 2 � Spawning occurs late May to late July in water 16-20�C � Occurs in moderate current in runs and riffles � Males and females defend nests � Eggs laid in clusters under rocks � Fecundity is 17-166 eggs per female Population Status, Economic, or Ecological Importance: � Ohio lamprey have been found to parasitize this fish References: Jenkins, R.E and N.M.
